Montana Medicaid helps low-income, working Montanans who have no other option for health coverage. Affordable, accessible primary and preventive care services improve health and keep costs down for everyone.
Rural hospitals are a lifeline for many across our state. More people having access to health coverage through Medicaid provides important revenue for Montana’s smallest and most rural hospitals, helping to ensure they can stay open and provide much-needed access to care for everyone.
Under our current Montana Medicaid program, funding for substance use disorder (SUD) has increased five-fold, the number of state-authorized SUD treatment providers has doubled and major funding for ongoing mental health treatment was secured and approved by the legislature.
The health coverage provided under the current Medicaid program has helped stabilize healthcare providers of all kinds through additional reimbursement for important services. That means the providers our families rely on – from doctors and dentists to counselors and clinics – can keep their doors open and wait times shorter.
Medicaid saves money for both patients and the public by allowing Medicaid recipients easier access to primary care, which means they avoid expensive emergency room visits down the line. With Montana Medicaid, the federal government pays for 90% of the services for coverage, while our state pays only 10%. Without Medicaid, the state would have to spend an extra $26 million to close the gap from losing federal funds.
