When employees have access to health care, they are less likely to miss work due to illness, resulting in increased productivity and reduced costs for businesses.

Whether a venture startup or an established employer that needs to reinvest in new equipment, many businesses simply can’t afford to provide health insurance to their employees, much less their employees’ families. Medicaid acts as a safety net for employees to stay gainfully employed and families healthy.

The current Medicaid program provides vital support to Montana businesses in several ways.

Direct benefits to Montana businesses

  • Less than half (44%) of workers in Montana are covered by employer-provided health insurance. Montana Medicaid fills the gap to keep workers healthy and on the job.1
  • To provide health insurance for all Medicaid enrolled workers in 2023, it would cost employers an estimated $430 million to $1.1 billion, depending on whether single or family coverage was offered.1
  • In 47 of Montana’s 56 counties, a third or more of businesses employed at least one Medicaid enrolled worker. Some rural counties, including Petroleum, Glacier, Blaine, Wheatland, and Valley, exceeded 40%.1

Not only does Montana Medicaid keep employees on the job, the program delivers major economic impacts to Montanans.

Overall Economic Benefits

The current Montana Medicaid program supports job growth, personal spending and economic growth throughout the state. Montana Medicaid’s extended coverage helps create:

  • Up to 8,000 jobs across multiple industries.4
  • Up to $560 million in personal income, which in turn is reinvested and spent at local businesses.4

The current Medicaid program also improves financial health: the share of Montana households with medical debt fell from 17% in 2015 to 4% in 2023.4
